Newton Public School District

K-4 Library Media Center Philosophy Statement

The mission of the school library media center is to ensure that all students and staff are effective users of ideas, information, and resources, and that students use the library program as a means to achieve Kansas standards.

Collection development and maintenance are the primary responsibility of the school librarian.  Other areas of focus include literature appreciation, information skills, media/technology literacy, and team-teaching.

The library program reflects the Kansas Curricular Standards for Library Media.  It is expected that students will become life-long learners, using libraries to enjoy print and non-print materials, as well as to locate needed information.

In order to provide these services and meet these roles effectively, the library media program requires a trained, certified, professional library media specialist, as well as administrative support and adequate funding.

Program Goals

  • To provide physical access to information by providing a carefully selected, systematically organized, up-to-date collection of materials on topics which reflect the information needs of students and staff
  • To provide leadership, instruction, and consulting assistance in the use of instructional and informational technology
